Lamedalehine ogaputk 'Blue Glitter'/ New bloomer in my November garden - Erynngium planum 'Blue Glitter' |
Summary: Mid-November Frosty Mornings
Very dark and gloomy has been this first half of November. Except short cold spell in late October, it has been rather warm and frost free. This Sunday morning however, it was clear, bright and frosty after a long time. So at least for a while the weather is about to change as the cold high pressure is pushing in from north with Arctic air masses. Clear nights and dropping temperatures have created white frosty mornings three days in row now. I tried to capture some of it in my garden.
Another set of pictures is from day earlier, from Saturday. It was warmer then and rare sun rays from gaps in clouds lit the few colourful spots to shine. It was rather cheerful in our otherways colourless and dull late autumn.
Over the weekend I worked in one of my sempervivum beds. Moss tends to be a problem this year. It grows on bare patches and as well in pads of sempervivum plants. I removed it as much as possible and spread new gravelly soil on top. Time consuming work but well worth it. I also checked my canna tubers in cellar and thank God, they all are fine. When I lifted them at the end of October during the previous cold spell, the soil had frozen about 5-8 cm and there was real threat that the tubers might of been damaged by it too.

And for the last but not least - I have a new bloomer in my garden! It is Eryngium planum 'Blue Glitter'. I planted them in mid-summer and had no hopes to see them in bloom this year. So I was quite surprised in September, finding that they start putting out flower spikes. Well ofcourse, it was awfully late, but thanks to long and mild autumn, one has made it. It is not like it should be in normal circumstances - metallic and blue, but it's there and its blooming. One tough fella!
