Summary: Witches are bathing
July was ticking its last minutes when I was writing this post. It wasn't average July by all means. Last days of it brought all that's possible - rain, thunder, sunshine, in some days, all at once. There is an old Estonian saying for weather as such - witches are bathing while raining and sunshine are joined together. What was the main feature of this passing month however, was the constant coolness. Normally the warmest moth of the year had no warmth stored for us,
In my garden, some plants benefitted from the situation. Many of them grew well, to abnormally great size, while others performed modestly. For example, Maltese Cross grew bigger than ever and bloomed very rich. Monks Hood also grew very tall, but had a little problem with aphids. Now it looks great. But what goes for all - blooms lasted long on all plants and this was caused surely by this chilliness.
But one group of plants suffered clearly from our very modest summer weather and especially from continuous cold nights and these were my exotics. There hasn't been a year in which I haven't had a canna blooms by the end of July. Well this is the year now. Dahlias are also sort of slow and who can blame them? Hopefully August will bring a little more warmth and gives a chance for my Hot Bed!
One colourful corner of joy is my Bee&Butterfly Bed. It has come to its fullness by the end of July and I really like its abundant hue. But what really makes me happy - it looks that bees and butterflies tend to like it as well. And after all, it was purely dedicated to them.
